Anke Engelke is one of the most famous TV faces in Germany. What she thinks about her image.

Anke Engelke (55) has been one of the most famous German celebrities for many years. Apparently she gives little thought to her public image.

“Maybe the weather is even more important to me”

“Perhaps the weather is even more important to me than my standing, my image,” Engelke said in an interview with the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung”. “Being genuine” and “having your own credibility” are important to her. She “doesn’t care whether people like her work, but I don’t want it to be so important that it becomes my motivation”. Then she would go into an “addiction”, “and I think addictions are so bad”.

Engelke does not want to think about their “effect. It is not a nice idea that so many people have an opinion about you.” The time when they knew “very, very many people” is over anyway. It was “a concept, a brand”, but “now many are dying away, and the young people, the 14-year-olds, may just know me from ‘LOL’.

Another season?

The talk is of the successful show “LOL: Last One Laughing”, which is the most popular format on Amazon Prime Video in Germany, as the streaming service announced in October. No wonder that a third season is already being planned. Engelke, who “doesn’t see herself as a comedian”, took part in both of the previously available ones.

The list of participants in the format in which the person who manages not to laugh for the longest time to win reads like a who’s who of the German entertainment industry. Barbara Schöneberger (47), Carolin Kebekus (41), Kurt Krömer (46), Annette Frier (47), Bastian Pastewka (49) and Klaas Heufer-Umlauf (38) were just some of the previous candidates besides Engelke. Michael Bully Herbig (53) leads the comedy show.

In an interview with the news agency spot on news, Engelke said at the beginning of October whether she would take part again. “Always. I would always do it. Because it’s such an extraordinary experiment. You rarely experience anything in our crazy job that is so unpredictable. […] What I experienced the first and second time ‘LOL’ could not be foreseen. None of that! It’s in great shape, “she said.
