Ambitious Winter: ‘Want to win things as a coach that I didn’t win as a player’

Aron Winter would like to enter the training field as head coach. The former Ajax player tells that in the Saturday morning NH Radio Sports Café. Winter was Erik ten Hag’s assistant coach at Ajax between 2017 and 2019. After that he was assistant national coach for Greece under John van ‘t Schip and at the end of September he was interim national coach for Suriname.

Winter indicates that his ambitions lie on the training field and that he just wants to become a trainer again. The temporary national coachship in Suriname went well, but Winter prefers to work at a club. ‘National coach is also very nice, but the activities are minimal. It’s only five times a year and that’s not enough. I want to be on the field with those guys every day.’

The Surinamese Football Association has indicated that it would like to continue with Winter as national coach. ‘I am also open to it, but then we still have to change some things. Wherever you go to work, the environment must be set up in such a way that you can work comfortably.’ The former Ajax player would like to transfer his football philosophy to the players and has clear ambitions. ‘As a coach I want to win the things that I just didn’t win as a player. I’m very ambitious and I want to get back on the field.’

‘A new challenge will come soon’

Winter indicates that his management is currently working for him. He is waiting for that now, but he is also busy himself. ‘Because I also know a lot of people and I also let my face be seen and heard: I want to get back to work.’ The former Ajax player is waiting for the next great challenge, he says. ‘And it will come one day. I want to be head coach.’
