The Supervisory Board of Ajax is in no hurry to appoint a new technical director, it was announced during the General Meeting of Shareholders. Since the departure of Marc Overmars, Gerry Hamstra and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar have taken over the technical lead and that does not seem to change in the short term.
Overmars had been active since the summer of 2012 as the person ultimately responsible for Ajax’s technical policy. However, the director of player policy left the Amsterdam club after transgressive behavior towards female employees. He left Ajax in February 2022, after which he reappeared in his next position in March. He is now active as technical director of Royal Antwerp.
Leen Meijaard, chairman of the supervisory board of Ajax, says that there is no great rush in appointing a new technical director. ‘After Overmars withdrew, we had discussions with candidates from the Netherlands and abroad. Those candidates either didn’t want to work at Ajax or we ultimately didn’t want to collaborate.’
‘After that we were confronted with a difficult situation due to the sudden departure of Ten Hag’, says Meijaard, who says that the focus then turned to the search for a new trainer. It was found in the name of Alfred Schreuder. ‘Then we said: for now it is Van der Sar and Hamstra and Huntelaar. Hamstra and Huntelaar fill it in together with the scouting, while waiting for a new football commissioner with a view to appointing a new technical director. After all, they have to work together for four years.’
Blind will not be the new director of football affairs
The new football commissioner is still awaited. The filling of that position is given priority, after which a new technical director can be looked at. In principle there is no deviation from this order. In any case, Danny Blind will not be the new technical director of Ajax. He is currently active as assistant national coach to Louis van Gaal and after the World Cup it will be decided whether he will return to his position as football commissioner.
