Great sadness in the sports world: The Turkish international Ahmet Calik has died after a tragic car accident. He was only 27 years old.

Ahmet Calik was already on the field in 2010 with the U-16. In the so-called Süper Lig, Turkey’s top division, he was under contract with clubs such as Gençlerbirliği Ankara, Galatasaray Istanbul and most recently Konyaspor. In 2016 he competed with the national team at the European Championship in France. Now the news of his death is shocking fans and colleagues. The young kicker died at the age of only 27.

Ahmet Calik († 27) is dead

On the morning of January 11, 2022, Ahmet had a traffic accident on a highway near the capital Ankara, as reported by the Turkish news agency “Anadolu”. He is said to have lost control of the vehicle around 9:00 a.m. local time and strayed from the lane. According to the “Gazete Futbol”, the footballer was the only occupant of the car and died at the scene of the accident. An accident investigation has been initiated.

Mourning for the footballer

Numerous people say goodbye to the young athlete on social media. Lukas Podolski, 36, who played for Galatasaray with Calik, posted an Instagram post in Turkish to commemorate his colleague.

“I was so sad when I heard the news, I am shocked. […] May God let your soul rest in heaven, “writes Podolski about the black and white photo by Ahmet Calik.

Ahmet’s youngest club, Konyaspor, also expresses his grief with an emotional tweet.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of our football player Ahmet Çalik, who has won the love of our fans and our city since his first visit to our Konyaspor. Our condolences go to all of us, especially his family,” reads there.
