In this period when purchasing power is at half mast, merchants in the city center opened the ball, this morning of June 22, for this start, advanced by 15 days, of summer sales with – 50%, or even -70% on the shelves. However, customers did not really rush to the stores.
Clément, a 40-year-old from Perpignan carrying a bag from Galeries Lafayette, confides “I didn’t have anything in particular to buy, but as I’m going on vacation in 15 days I bought some pants and a shirt at attractive prices and that’s not negligible at the moment with inflation. Plus it’s the opening of the sales so I took advantage of the bargain.”
Conversely, this client knowingly chose the Muy Mucho brand (decorative objects, tableware), interested in lots of tea towels and napkins. “I was challenged by the 30 to 50% discount displayed in the window, because any reduction is good to take at the moment. And then necessity rules: my table linen was worn” she admits. For her part, Clémentine, 26, “was waiting impatiently” this 1st day of sales in Perpignan, the date of which is modeled this year – after 13 years of difference – on the national calendar. “In fact I had been used for 3, 4 years, to go for the first day of the sales with a friend in Narbonne, she admits. When I learned that Perpignan was entering the race this Wednesday, I favored local shopping. I’m delighted to already see items at 50% off because I’m on a very tight budget… plus by being there I’m saving a full tank of gas.”
For their part, the professionals are divided. Thus, Valérie Reboul (Liu-Jo boutique) says to herself “satisfied with the advanced date” and already offers a 1st markdown at -50% for “allowing my clients to treat themselves to a nice crush without breaking the bank”. Isabelle and Julie (Victoria) have booked a Good Deals corner, while Valérie Nomico (Otago, men’s shop), also president of the UCAP* association, regrets that “the start of the sales has not been set for the beginning of August with the tourist clientele in addition”. Finally Carole Couic, the director of the Burton store -1st markdown at -50% – notes “a gradual decline in sales since the Covid crisis, significantly aggravated by the current economic situation.”
